"They Make Difference" (John Driscoll Endorsement - See Text Below)
Spokesman Review - October 13, 2008
6th District, House Position 2: Rep. John Ahern, a Republican, has held the seat since 2000. His challenger, Democrat John
Driscoll, has deep roots in Spokane but this is his first run for elected office. The contrasts don't end there.
Ahern's focus is business and crime. He has been successful in toughening the state's drunken driving laws and has advocated
other tough-on-crime legislation. He pledges to never vote for tax increases, which means he needs identify service cuts to
balance the budget. He says he would forgo cuts for public safety and corrections and would target the departments of Social
and Health Services and Labor and Industries. However, he offers no specifics.
He says he supports education, but beyond ending the Washington Assessment of Student Learning, he offers no details for
improving schools. "Back to basics" is too vague. We disagree with his views on social issues and note he starred in two
embarrassing episodes in Olympia centering on abortion rights and equality for gay and lesbian couples. Ahern is
ill-informed on the issues surrounding access to health care, which leads us to his opponent.
John Driscoll is the health administrator for Project Access, a wonderful program that reaches out to the uninsured with
donated health-care services. He is knowledgeable about the issue, though he wouldn't commit to one of the five solutions
the Legislature is examining. He strikes a progressive note on social issues, education and open government.
In an economy that relies so much on health care, Driscoll could be a real asset in speaking up for the needs of Spokane
County. He isn't a polished politician and has much to learn on other subjects, but we think the district would be better
served with the fresh approach that Driscoll promises.

Ahern speaks out of turn
Tuesday, October 28, 2008
The Oct. 16 article about the Ahern-Driscoll race for the 6th Legislative District House seat had some outlandish quotes from Rep. Ahern. I speak to only one.
Speaking of his opposition to same-sex marriages, Ahern says, "the fact is that it goes against all major religions, Christian, Catholic, Jewish and, also, Islam." Hoping to clarify I called Ahern. He is a very sincere and nice man who comes across dogmatic and judgmental. Heaven is forbidden to the person who holds a different religious position from Rep. Ahern. His dogmatic religion clearly determines his political positions.
Rep. Ahern told me he is not a religious scholar and did no research – yet such sweeping statements. Ahern, I respect your opinion, but speak your views, not others. Your judgment that only Christians on the fringe support same-sex weddings is wrong.
I belong to the United Church of Christ (UCC) with a rich tradition springing forth from the Congregationalists and the German Evangelical and Reformed church. Along with many Episcopalian churches, many UCC churches are open and affirming to LGBTQ persons.
Vote for John Driscoll, the one who will hear the voices beyond his own and not be blinded by religious dogmatism.

Driscoll can weigh options
Sunday, October 26, 2008
I was amazed to see John Ahern actually say that there is no difference between supporting an income tax and expressing support for consideration of the topic ("Sparks fly over income tax talk," Oct. 22).
When someone is considering an issue, they examine it, study it and look at all of the pros and cons around the topic. They research it before forming an opinion about whether to support it or not. That is a responsible and logical way for our elected representatives to address the issues before them. The wrong way to do things is to form an opinion on something and view all the evidence through the lens of that opinion, which is what Ahern's comments seem to suggest he supports doing.
We need representation in Olympia that is not afraid to look at issues in an honest, independent and thoughtful manner – regardless of the political noise surrounding them – and make decisions based on the actual evidence and not preconceived notions or political expediency. I believe John Driscoll is capable of doing this and that is why I am supporting him for 6th District representative.

Driscoll best choice for city
Saturday, October 25, 2008
Spokane has an opportunity to elect a person who cares about us and about our concerns. John Driscoll is that person.
What matters to us? We care about our families, our schools, our jobs, our health and our community. John Driscoll shares these values and will work hard to enrich our community.
John Driscoll is a businessman who also understands about our need for good family jobs. He works in the health care industry and understands the need for good-quality health care. As a third-generation Spokane native he knows about keeping our communities strong with security and good schools.
What has our current state representative done for us? If you're like me, you want something better. John Driscoll will provide the leadership we need to get there.

Ahern disrespects young citizens
Saturday, October 25, 2008
Republican leader Curtis Fackler's letter lauding the involvement of local young people in the political process was a touch ironic ("Youth vote picks Republicans," Oct. 18). As the young people's mock vote was heavily tilted towards Republican office-seekers, Mr. Fackler proudly referred to them as the future of the country.
In January of this year another group of local young people, equally the future of the country, traveled to Olympia to visit John Ahern and voice their concerns with family planning issues. As Spokane media pointed out in its coverage of the visit, Mr. Ahern was quoted as repeatedly asking the students, "How many unborn babies have you guys killed in the last year?"
How Mr. Ahern's disgracefully crass treatment of these young people respects and honors them as the future of the country is anybody's guess. Mr. Ahern forgets that insulting future voters, their voting families and friends as well as other voters like me is hardly the way to get re-elected. Mr. Ahern seems to typify the lack of civility and respect which passes for political dialogue in this country. Mr. Ahern, did you think so many of us would forget? It's time for you to take up the rocking chair.

Attacks on Driscoll unfounded
Friday, October 24, 2008
John Driscoll, who is running for state representative from the 6th District, is my son. As such, I have heard his campaign speech several times. I could probably give it myself. I have never, repeat, never heard him advocate a state income tax, as stated by a mailing from the Republican Party.
Some people will go to any length to run down an opponent, including lying. I am very disappointed that John Ahern, whom I know personally and have voted for in the past, would allow this to happen. For that reason, I have personally lost respect for Mr. Ahern. I urge you strongly to reject that John and vote for John Driscoll for state representative, 6th District.

Vote for smart investments
Sunday, October 19, 2008
In these difficult economic times we need to be looking for effective ways to build a skilled workforce to compete in a globally competitive economy. I view higher education as an investment, not an expenditure: an investment in our children, in our future, in good-paying jobs in our communities. Rep. John Ahern, R-Spokane, has consistently voted against funding for higher education in Washington state. My vote goes to Democratic challenger John Driscoll, a fiscally responsible candidate who understands the needs of our community and supports sustainable investments, like education, that will restore our economy's vitality.

Driscoll respects constituents
Friday, October 3, 2008
As a 6th Legislative District resident, I can't wait to cast my vote for John Driscoll. The reason? I'm confident Driscoll has what it takes to represent me and my neighbors in Olympia.
I'm confident John Driscoll understands how to tackle the critical issue of shrinking access to health care. John's work with Project Access, a nonprofit program that links physicians with uninsured people, proves Driscoll is committed to thinking outside the box when it comes to health care delivery.
I'm confident that John Driscoll knows how to move forward with plans for our region's economic development. John's business background, commitment to living wages and enthusiasm for opportunities presented by technology and green industries prove Driscoll will consider all the options and everyone's interests when developing economic strategies for Spokane.
Finally, I'm confident that John Driscoll will treat all of his constituents with respect – unlike incumbent John Ahern, whose talk of domestic partnerships making it possible for people to marry their dogs and harassment of teen lobbyists is both disrespectful and embarrassing. John Driscoll's work with people from across the spectrum – from business leaders to homeless people – proves Driscoll can be a voice for all the residents of the 6th LD.

Driscoll attuned to local needs
Wednesday, September 24, 2008
John Driscoll, candidate for the state Legislature, 6th District, will be a strong, progressive voice for the district and for Spokane. John, a native Spokanite, familiar with our concerns and needs, is ready to go to work for us. He is a health services professional, experienced in health services management and now the director of Project Access, a nonprofit program that helps provide health care to uninsured people.
A main priority of John Driscoll in Olympia will be bringing our share of education resources to Spokane; to expand education at every level, elementary up to graduate and trade school. We will prepare our people/children for great careers based in Spokane.
Vote for someone who really knows (and cares about) the needs and concerns of Spokane citizens and will devote his energy, skills and knowledge to real solutions for us.

Driscoll will work for families
Thursday, September 18, 2008
I am a longtime Spokane citizen and advocate for healthy, educated people and communities. Our best choice for 6th District representative is one who is most experienced and dedicated to issues most important to us and our future. Quality, affordable health care and early childhood education are two of these issues.
Many children are on waiting lists for quality day care during the most important years of their development. I know of young mothers who have to drive every day clear across town to find acceptable day care.
John Driscoll has the most extensive experience and background. And, he truly cares about present and future generations, having deep roots in Spokane and raising his family here.
John Driscoll has had a career in health-care management as well as many other issues important for our community. He'll work for values we all share by promoting high-caliber education, family-wage jobs and accessible, high-quality health care for all. That is why I support this candidate for 6th District representative.

Driscoll the Best Choice
Saturday, September 6, 2008
I am a nurse practitioner, former Army officer and a Republican. I support Democrat John Driscoll for the 6th District. Driscoll is a businessman with excellent health care experience that is in short supply in Olympia. John Driscoll is the clear choice. The 6th District is in dire need of a representative who can advocate for the needs of our community. The recent history of our current representative is one of inattentiveness and embarrassment.
John Driscoll has the experience in the business community to move legislation in the right direction. His experience with a privately owned surgical facility and with Project Access gives John the insight needed to understand private and public ventures. His experience will be used for the greater public good. I ask that you research the candidates before you vote and vote for John Driscoll in the November election.

Choose Driscoll over Ahern
Sunday, August 17, 2008
Early in 2008, Spokane students went to Olympia to discuss increased funding for sex education and pregnancy prevention. I was disappointed to read how John Ahern responded. He treated them with disrespect by repeatedly asking an inflammatory, aggressive question and then refusing to allow them to state their position. No citizen should be treated that way. I could never vote for Ahern in the upcoming primary knowing he has shown this kind of disrespect.
It is clear that we need a change in Olympia. Rep. Ahern has done little to represent the interests of the 6th District. He has voted against school funding and investments in health care, and he opposes progressive issues that would improve our community. He is simply out of touch with our needs, and he demonstrates his narrow-minded views with hostility.
That is why I support John Driscoll for 6th District representative. He believes in cost-effective government policies that benefit all. John Driscoll has dedicated himself to public service by working for a local nonprofit, and he understands Spokane's needs. He'll work for the values we all share by promoting high-caliber education, family-wage jobs and accessible, high-quality health care for all.

Driscoll is voters' best choice
Saturday, August 2, 2008
This November, I hope that voters in the 6th District will join me in voting for John Driscoll as our next state representative. Spokane is facing many important issues we should approach by working to build on our community strengths. John Driscoll has deep roots in this community and the experience to work in Olympia to grow Spokane's economy. He will invest in education for workforce development, strengthen our health care economy and address critical transportation issues.
We need a representative who will bring positive change to the 6th District, a progressive leader who will take an energetic and active role representing us in Olympia. John Driscoll is an experienced business leader in the health care industry and is committed to making health services accessible to individuals and families of all backgrounds. His experiences and commitment to improving our quality of life make him the best choice this fall.
